Dear Parents,

I have returned the children their Blue Files, in view
of their Chinese Little Test 2 this coming Friday. I
really hope to see an improvement from everyone! =)

There will be written comprehension this time round,
so it will really make a difference if they put in much
effort and strive for it! =)

2B Rock n Roll! =)

Dear Parents,

Today is the second day of Rock and Roll practice for 2B!
A very BIG THANK YOU to Mrs Au, our nice and patient
PV who comes and teaches the children every Tuesday. =)

For the future sessions, there are a few things to note:
1) for parents and children who want the Rock n Roll music,
please pass a CD to me. I will record the music for you, so
that your child can practice the dance steps at home too. =)
we are using track 7 of the CD.

2) boys, for the next session onwards, please bring along a cap
for practice. Mrs Au has shared with me some interesting dance
steps she has in mind for you guys! Cool... =)

3) lastly, as the group is quite big for a dance class(30 pupils),
we will really appreicate if any parents who know or love dancing
to join us for the future sessions. It is ok if you can't join all the
sessions regularly, but as and when if you are free and ok to join
us, do feel free to let me know! You can email me at

Our practice time is: Every Tuesday, 11.20pm to 12.20pm,
at Music Room 1.

Vote Earth - Saturday, 28 March, 8.30pm

Tomorrow at 8:30pm sharp, you will see lights going off in
many places of Singapore. Many Singapore government
organisations, private institutions, big, medium and small
enterprises are participating in the Earth Hour, which will
take place at 8:30pm (local time of respective nations) on
28 Mar 2009.

These places include all the CDCs, Uni, Poly, some Schools,
Hotels, and local landmarks and attractions such as the
Merlion, the Singapore Flyer, Suntec City Mall etc.

Across the globe, lights will also go out on some of the most
recognised landmarks on the planet, including Christ the
Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Table Mountain in Cape Town,
Sydney Opera House, CN Tower in Toronto, Millennium
Stadium in Cardiff and the worldís tallest constructed building
Taipei 101.

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world's
first global election, between Earth and global warming. For
the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race
and background have the opportunity to use their light switch
as their vote - Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or
leaving them on is a vote for global warming.

The goal is to have 1 billion people switching off their lights as
part of a global vote. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for
every individual, every business, and every community to take
control over the future of our planet.

We encourage you to participate in this voting. Your light switch
is your vote. Switch it off at 8:30pm for an hour on Saturday,
28 Mar 2009. Turning your lights off for an hour is a great start.

There are also many other things you can do to make Earth Hour
2009 a success. Visit the website at www.earthhour.org. Our Earth
needs your Vote.

Dear Parents,

there will not be any lessons next Monday, due to the movie
outing. Please let your child bring a small bag, water bottle and

some snacks, and also a cardigan too, as the movie theater may

be quite cold. I am sure the children will enjoy the movie greatly!

听写（四）与 小测验(二) 的日期

Dear Parents,

As the children will be going for the movie screening of "You & Me"
next Monday, I have informed them that the date of 听写（四）will
be changed to next Tuesday(31 March) instead.

As for 小测验（二）(Units 5 to 8), it will be next Friday(3 April).

I hope the children will be well-prepared for the above 2 assessments,

Nanyang Glitters - Rock n Roll Rehearsal

Dear Parents,

Today we have started the first practice and rehearsal
for 2B's Nanyang Glitters - Rock n Roll Dance Item! =)

A Big Thank You to Mrs Au, one of our parents, who has
graciously taken up the challenge of teaching our 30 little
boys and girls dancing the Rock n Roll. =)

The practices are fixed on every Tuesday, during 2B's
Music lesson, from 11.20am to 12.20pm at Music Rm 1.
I think the children truly enjoyed themselves during the
dance session today! =) Yup, keep it rolling~!!

p/s. tomorrow we will be visiting the Stamp Museum as
a whole class outing for National Education Trail. Please
remind your child to bring along a small bag, water bottle
and some snacks.
we will be back to school at about 12.30pm, and they will
be given a canteen break till 12.55pm. lessons will resume
after that, and it will be the usual dismissal at 1.30pm.

Sharing on how I coach Joy in Mathematics

During the Meet-The-Parent session, a parent queried me on how to coach her child in Mathematics. She was anxious about her child and I decided to share with her how I coach my daughter at home.I thought I should also air it in the blog as well , as some parents are also at their wits end. However, you must also bear in mind your child's weaknesses and work to address them first.
Well, here it goes:
Firstly, I will go through the topic in the textbook before her teacher teaches her.
( This is to give her confidence and a sense of achievement if the teacher picks on her to answer a question and she will able to do so.)
Next, I will let her complete the relevant topic in an assessment book that has mostly knowledge questions. If she is not able to get 85% of them correct, I know that she has not mastered the concepts well and I will reteach.)
Thirdly, I will give her a challenging assessment book. However, before I throw her into the deep sea, I will teach her using similar examples and then let her practice on her own. I will also go through them in greater detail and ask her how she got the answer to the question.
Finally, I will get her to do the Challenge Sums in the Heuristics assessment book.
I also give her three problem sums to work on daily.
I hope that the information I give is helpful and not overwhelming!
Maybe, the parents whose children do well in their Mathematics can also share their secrets. :)

亲爱的家长们：

这个三月假期，若有闲暇，不妨带孩子们到图书馆借阅儿童书籍。

《三毛》与《阿凡提》这两个人物，是我启蒙时期的好朋友。在
班上我也常与孩子们分享他们的故事。

《三毛》培养了孩子的恻隐之心，《阿凡提》则长了他们的睿智。
非常希望孩子们能通过他们的故事，增强自己的语文能力；更希望
孩子们能从他们的身上学到如何关怀他人、照顾弱小，也懂得如何
以智慧、平和的方式解决难题。

Nanyang Glitters 2009

First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to update you on an exciting upcoming event involving your child/ward.

The Nanyang Schools Alumni Association, together with Nanyang Primary School, Nanyang Girls’ High and Nanyang Kindergarten, will be organizing a concert -- “Nanyang Glitters”. This concert will involve all P2 pupils as well as those from the various CCA and performance groups. Every P2 class will be performing on stage. In order to accommodate a bigger audience, two shows have been planned. The details of the concert are as follows:

Date: 1 August 2009 (Saturday)
Time: Matinee: 3.30pm - 5pm
Evening: 7.30pm - 9pm
Venue: Nanyang Girls’ High School (Siew May Auditorium)

The objective of this concert is to provide a platform for our P2 pupils to showcase their talent as well as for our various CCA and performance groups to perform live on stage before an audience.
The rehearsal dates will be announced at a later date. Do note that attendance is compulsory for all P2 pupils. We sincerely look forward to your support in this event and make this a memorable event for you and your child.

2B NE Trail on 25 March

Dear Parents,

Come Term 2 Week 1, the children of 2B will be going for a
National Education Trail on 25 March, Wednesday. They will
be visiting the Stamp Museum of Singapore. :)

The consent forms have been given out to the children today.
Please sign and ask your child to bring it back to school on the
first day of school, 23 March, Monday.

Please prepare some snacks and drinks for your child to bring
along on the trail, as the place we are going does not sell food
and drinks. And on that day of outing, they will be having their
recess at the Museum. Further details are given in the letters.

Model Drawing 2

I had the children sit for a surprise Mathematics test last week. There was, of course, plenty of groans and objections from the children. I explained that it was purely a diagnostic test on model drawing so that I could identify the children who needed help. The paper had a mix of part-whole and comparison questions and they were given 20 minutes to complete four problem sums. And here is the diagnosis: (1) The children did not read the question stem carefully. They have been taught two step word problems but treated the problem as a one step word problem. They did not check if their answer " answered" the question. (2) Many children were confused with the part-whole and comparsion model drawing. I have taught them to read the question and identify the key words. If the problem asks for what is left, then it is a(subtraction) whole-part question. If they ask for "altogether", then they must draw a part-whole( addition) model. Comparison questions are usually accompanied by more/less than in their question stem.

Model Drawing

The children are taught model drawing. The three things that I look for in a good model are (1) Labels (2) Numbers (3) Question Mark I have also instructed the children to place key words beside their number sentences so that any reader will understand why they have that equation. The children will be taught the part-whole model and comparison model for this year. A good website you can explore with your child is 'thinkingblocks.com'.
