Dismissal Procedure

17 Jul 2009

Dear Parents/Guardians

DISMISSAL PROCEDURE

We are going into the Week 4 after 3 weeks of daily operations
in managing various aspects of Influenza A (H1N1) matters,
including tracking all visitors entering our school. In this aspect,
one of the difficult tasks which we have to encounter is the
restriction of entry of visitors into our school without unduly
inconveniencing our parents/guardians fetching their child during
dismissal.

Before the outbreak of H1N1, both Gates A and B are opened for
parents/guardians to walk freely into the school to fetch their child
during their respective dismissals. As we have to be vigilant in
keeping out unwell visitors, it would be almost impossible with our
limited resources to check all parents/guardians entering our school
during the dismissal.

However, we recognize that not allowing parents/guardians to walk
into our school to fetch the pupils would create a big crowd at our
gates. After careful thoughts, we have decided to implement a control
policy of restricting the movement of unchecked visitors within our
school.

As is currently practiced, parents/guardians are restricted to entering
our school through Gate B only when fetching their child during the
normal school dismissal at 1:30pm. These parents/guardians must also
exit through Gate B after picking up their child. With the resumption of
CCA, remedial and supplementary classes, we can anticipate a larger
crowd.

Therefore, with effect from Monday 20 Jul, we will continue to disallow
parents/guardians to enter the school to fetch their child after these
classes. However, in order to disperse the crowd, we will also open Gate
B from 3pm to 4:15pm to allow pupils to exit there. With this dismissal
procedure, all parents/guardians could fetch their child either at Gate A
or Gate B (from 3pm to 4:15pm only).

We would like to seek your cooperation and understanding as we work
together to reduce and improve visitor flow into Nanyang Primary
School.

Thank you and best regards.

Vice Principal (Admin)

Commemoration of Racial Harmony Day - 20 July 2009

15 July 2009

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Commemoration of Racial Harmony Day @ NYPS (20 July 2009)

Singapore is a nation built by people of many races and cultures.
Living in harmony is therefore important and relevant to all
Singaporeans, as it will ensure the continued peace and prosperity
that we have enjoyed for many years.

This year, Racial Harmony Day (RHD) will be commemorated on
20 July 2009 (Monday) at Nanyang Primary School. The theme
that has been identified by the Ministry of Education this year is
“Who’s Your Neighbour?”. It aims to remind us that the
fabric of our Singaporean society consists of a patchwork of inter-
connected communities both within Singapore and in relation to
our neighbouring countries. Pupils will explore and reflect on the
relationships they have with members of their community by
engaging in activities and discussions during their Social Studies
lessons in the coming week. In addition, on 20 July, pupils will get
to learn more about the Indian culture and have the opportunity
to play some traditional games with their classmates. Sale of
traditional food and free Henna painting during the 3 recesses in
the canteen will also add to the excitement of this cultural
experience.

We would like to seek your support to encourage your child to
come to school in traditional ethnic costumes like baju kurong,
Punjabi suit, sari etc. An Inter-Class Ethnic Costume Competition
will be held, with 1 winning class per level. The class with the
highest percentage of pupils dressed in ethnic costume wins!

Yours sincerely,
Mrs Low Ming Ming
HOD/Humanities

Fractions

This week, we are on the topic on fractions. Thought that I will put the definitions in the blog so that we speak a common language when you or I or Miss Pun teaches your child about fractions.

What is the definition of a fraction?
It is a part of a whole.

A fraction has a numerator and a denominator.

Numerator is the number of parts that is /are shaded or not shaded.

Denominator is the number of equal parts that the whole is divided into.
(e.g. If the square is cut into 4 equal parts, the denominator will show 4.
If the square is cut into 6 equal parts, the denominator will show 6.)

Please emphasise on equal parts because if the whole does not have equal parts, we cannot name a fraction for it.

Comparing Fractions

1) First, we look at the denominator.
e.g. One fraction has a denominator of 3 and the other fraction, a denominator of 5.
We will ask the child if he/she likes to share a pizza with 3 children or 5 children.
If he/she wants a greater slice, he/she will want to share it with as little people as possible.
If we are looking at greater fraction, then the fraction with the denominator of 3 is greater.
If we are looking at a smaller fraction, then the fraction with the denominator of 5 is smaller.

2) If the denominator is the same, then we will look at the numerator.

Hope that the information above is useful!
Jennifer Tan

Please note that Miss Pun will be teaching the class for three weeks after which I will take charge of the class again.

Blue Slips Redemption!! =)

Dear Children,

The dates for redemption of Blue Slips are as below:

For term 3 and 4, the redemption counter is only set up

child today and kindly indicate the handphone number
that you would prefer to receive SMSes from the school.

Nanyang Portal and Gmail Accounts

Dear Parents and Children,

There are 2 circulars informing you how to access
Nanyang Portal and Gmail for both Parent and Child.
Please read through them and access the Portal and
Gmail at home. =)

Please send me an email (ng_ju_sze@nyps.edu.sg)
through the Gmail Accounts (Parent's and Chlid's) to
acknowledge that you have successfully logged in. =)

Do highlight any log-in problems so that I can help you
to refer them to the school's IT department. This is very
important as in the event of school closure, we will actively
use the Portal and Gmail to conduct home-based learning.

Thank you!
Ms Ng

p/s. one point to note: when the system prompts you to provide
an alternative email address (in case of Gmail failure), please do
not type in your child's LEAD.com email address, as this will
create some problems and confusion at a later stage. Thanks! =)
