NYPS Information Sheet dated 20 May 2009

Dear Parents/Guardian
Information Sheet 2009/05/20

ROAD SAFETY

Recently, it has been raining quite frequently in the morning during school arrival time. We have observed and also received feedback from parents that the traffic around the school practically came to a standstill whenever it rained heavily. As the school is located in a residential area with narrow roads, I seek your cooperation and understanding in observing the following road safety rules and practices.

Please be reminded that no parking or waiting is allowed along King’s Road at all times. If you cannot locate your child/ward at Gate A, please make a round trip via Queen’s Road and return to the gate later. By waiting along King’s Road or Coronation Road, you are causing an obstruction and other vehicles will be forced to overtake your vehicle on the other lane against the traffic flow. This is extremely dangerous as our children are crossing the road and will not anticipate vehicles to be travelling against the traffic flow. If you need to come into the school to fetch your child/ward, please park your vehicle at the public car park at Blk 4, Queen’s Road and take a short walk to the school.

Our community wardens and staff are stationed along the road during arrival and dismissal times to direct traffic and help our children cross the road. When you approach them, please drive carefully and follow their instructions. We have a few cases of vehicles brushing against our community wardens and security guards.

Always observe the traffic flow and do not pose a danger to other road users by taking short cuts and travelling against traffic flow. As the traffic flow is slow during peak hours, please be patient and drive carefully. Please do not overtake dangerously when the traffic is held up by parents/guardian stopping to pick up their child/ward. Doing so will endanger your lives as well as the lives of other road users.

Please give way to oncoming traffic especially at the junction of King’s Road and Lutheran Road and try to avoid stopping your vehicle inside the junction of King’s Road and Lutheran Road. If the oncoming vehicles along Lutheran Road cannot clear the junction towards Farrer Road, it will create a tail back all the way to Gate B. This will prevent vehicles along King’s Road from turning into the school as all the roads are linked.

Please do not leave your cars unattended and do not obstruct the gates of our residents. We have received feedback that vehicles were parked outside their gates and the drivers were nowhere to be found.

Wet weather days: All pupils must keep an umbrella or raincoat in the school bag everyday in case of wet weather. Please get your child/ward to put on the raincoat and be ready to alight from your vehicle along the driveway either at the sheltered walkway or meeting point. The school will also deploy additional staff with umbrellas to help out.

Please do not sound the horn unnecessarily or use the horn to signal to your child/ward. Our residents have complained about the inconsiderate horning by our parents.

UPDATE OF TRAVEL PLANS

With the mid-year school vacation around the corner, your child/ward may be travelling overseas for a holiday. Please provide us with the travel details of your child/ward in the form provided and submit it to your form teacher by Friday, 22 May 2009. Should there be any change in your travel plans, please call the General Office at 64672677 or you may drop us an email at nyps@moe.edu.sg to update us with the necessary details.
